In Udupi, 16 candidates file nomination papers

Gopal Poojary, Raghupati Bhat, Pramod Madhwaraj, among others, submit papers

As many as 16 candidates submitted a total of 37 sets of nomination papers for the Assembly elections in five Assembly constituencies in Udupi district on Monday.

According to a press release, K. Gopal Poojary of the Congress, C. Ravindra of Janata Dal (Secular), Manjunath K. of Janata Dal (United) and Abdul Azeed of All India Muslim Empowerment Party submitted their nomination papers for the Byndoor Assembly Constituency.

Kiran Kumar Kodgi of the BJP, S. Prakash Shetty of Janata Dal (S) and Sudhakar of Republican Party of India (RPI) filed their nomination papers for the Kundapur Assembly Constituency.

Pramod Madhwaraj of the Congress, K. Raghupati Bhat of the BJP and Shekhar Havanje of the RPI submitted their nomination papers for the Udupi Assembly Constituency at the Old Zilla Panchayat building here.

Vinay Kumar Sorake of the Congress and Lalaji Mendon of the BJP submitted their nomination papers for Kaup Assembly Constituency at the Old Zilla Panchayat building here.

Ashraf Ali, an independent candidate, V. Sunil Kumar of the BJP, Sumant K. Poojary, independent candidate, and Uday Kumar of Bahujan Samaj Party submitted their nomination papers for the Karkala Assembly Constituency at the Taluk Office in Karkala.

Tuesday is the last day for the filing nomination papers. Scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on April 25. The late date for withdrawal of nomination papers is April 27. The elections will be held on May 12.

In Udupi, Mr. Sorake was to file his nomination papers followed by Mr. Mendon, Mr. Madhwaraj and Mr. Bhat. Most of the nomination papers were filed on Monday as Tuesday is considered by some as inauspicious.
