Indira Rai (40), a homemaker who had suffered burns in the blaze that broke out in Perne near Uppinangady after LPG tanker overturned on Tuesday, succumbed early on Saturday morning, taking the toll to 10. On Friday morning, Vimala (29), an anganwadi teacher from Puttur, had died at a hospital after developing complications.
Sources at Father Muller Hospital, where Indira had been admitted with over 60 per cent burns, said she died of complications arising from the burns at 2 a.m. on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the condition of another survivor who is undergoing treatment, Kateeja Hajiamma (70) is said to be stable. However, due to her advanced age and susceptibility for infections, doctors have kept her under observation of the Burns ICU ward in the hospital. She suffered 30 per cent burns to the arms and back.
Vimala, who died on Friday, had suffered 60 per cent burns. Vimala had stopped by a market place in Perne after visiting her sister when she was caught in the massive fireball that erupted around 10 a.m. on Tuesday. Six persons had died on the spot, and four more, including Vimala and Indira, succumbed to their injuries after being admitted to hospital in the city.

The district administration has said it had distributed Rs. 1 lakh each for the deceased (eight ) and Rs. 50,000 for the injured on Thursday. Assistant Commissioner Sadashiv Prabhu said the driver of the truck, Cheluvarasu (38) of Hosur in Tamil Nadu, had not been given compensation as his kin would be compensated by HPCL., which had hired the tanker.
