The Second Additional District and Sessions Court has granted bail to 11 persons charged for their alleged involvement in the attack on young men and women at a home stay on July 28, 2012.
The court has granted bail to Sandeep Shetty, Kiran B.S., Uday Thumbe, Varun, Nitin, Jagadish, Mahesh Nantoor, Venugopal, Tharanath, Ramesh Kotian, and Arun on Tuesday. They have been granted bail following Karnataka High Court’s order to grant bail to three other accused, namely Taranath, Rajesh and Shailesh on June 14. All the accused have been directed to attend the hearings regularly and cooperate in smooth conduct of the trial.
These accused were among the 44 persons against whom Mangalore Rural police had filed chargesheets in connection with the attack. As many as 37 persons, including two journalists Naveen Soorinje and Sharan, were arrested. Recently the State government decided to take back charges filed against Mr. Soorinje. Mr. Soorinje, Mr. Sharan and a few other accused have been released on bail. The case will be tried by the Second Additional District and Sessions Court.
Conductor held for minor’s rape
A 27-year-old conductor of a private bus was arrested for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl in Kavoor on Wednesday.
According to police, accused Faizal, a resident of Shantinagar, was the conductor of the bus in which the girl usually travelled. He had taken a photograph of her on his mobile phone and threatened her of publishing it. When the girl wanted to see the photograph, Faizal had told her that he will show it to her in her house.
In April, Faizal came to her house after knowing that her parents were not in town. He entered the house and then raped the girl on the premises. It came to her mother’s notice only a few days ago following a medical examination that showed her as pregnant. The girl filed a complaint accusing Faizal of raping her.
Kavoor police have arrested Faizal under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code. He has also been booked under the provisions of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and under the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012.
Accident death
A 40-year-old woman from Kodikal was killed and her husband was injured after a vehicle hit the motorcycle they were travelling on at the Padil traffic junction on Tuesday night.
Savitramma (40) and her husband Javare Gowda (50) were knocked down by a vehicle coming from Kulashekar. Savitramma died on the spot.
