Upinder Singh, daughter of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Professor and Head, Department of History, University of Delhi said on Thursday that history should be free from political interference of any kind.

Replying to questions by presspersons at Mangalore University she said, “History has been a deeply political subject. That is not new. If one studied history of history it reveals that political situations have influenced writing of history”.

Ms. Singh said, “There is methodology, analysis of sources and building of logical arguments. I strongly feel that history should not be the hand-made of any political ideology. I stand for liberal tradition of history writing”.

Ms. Singh said that there was no last word in history. “All histories should be questioned. There is no final history”.

Ms. Singh said that historians have recognised oral history as an important source in writing history.

She was in the university to inaugurate and deliver the key note address at the 24th session of three-day Karnataka History Congress.
