Says government has sanctioned funds, it will be run with the help of an NGO
Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake said on Tuesday that a toll free helpline for senior citizens will be set up in Udupi district in the current financial year in the wake of increasing complaints about the elderly facing mental and physical harassment. Mr. Sorake said the government had sanctioned Rs. 7 lakh for the helpline, which would be operated by the district police with the help of a non-governmental organisation.
Reiterating the State government’s commitment to safeguard the welfare of the senior citizens, Mr. Sorake used the inaugural function of the World Senior Citizens’ Day organised by the Department of Women and Child Welfare and other organisations, to list the schemes targeted at the wellbeing of the elderly.
Mr. Sorake said the government had invited proposals from non-governmental organisations to run a 25-bed old age home each in all 30 districts in the State.
The Minister said identity cards would be distributed to senior citizens aged above 60 with the help of NGOs in every taluk of the district. As many as 9,336 identity cards have already been distributed in the district.
