Coastal Karnataka, including Mangaluru, continued to receive heavy to very heavy rain with gusty winds since Tuesday resulting in uprooting of trees, landslips and swollen rivers in many places.

While the highest rainfall recorded was 15 cm in Hulikal in Shivamogga district between Tuesday and Wednesday morning, Agumbe received 13 cm, and Mangaluru (Panambur) , Kollur, Kundapura and Gerusoppa received 12 cm rainfall during the period. The average rainfall in Dakshina Kannada district during the period was 10.8 cm with Belthangady taluk receiving the highest 12.5 cm, followed by Sullia, 12.2 cm, Puttur, 11.7 cm, Bantwal, 10.3 cm and Mangaluru taluk 7.1 cm.

Kumaradhara, a tributary of the Netravathi, was swollen following copious rain since over a week and the bathing ghat at the pilgrimage centre Kukke Subrahmanya (Sullia taluk) was submerged.

The flood water was a couple of foot below the low-lying bridges at Kukke Subrahmanya while the one at Hosa Mutt between Uppinangady and Kukke Subrahmanya was submerged for a few hours on Tuesday. All rivulets and streams in Sullia taluk were full to the brim.

Meanwhile, the feeder power lines from Kumbra sub station in Puttur towards Eshwaramangala and Pernaje got snapped after six trees fell on the lines. MESCOM officials were engaged in restoring the lines. Another tree fell at Kowdichar in Ariyadka village in the taluk damaging a concrete road. There were reports of at least four houses being damaged in Puttur taluk in heavy rain.

The Ullal region, which has been witnessing sea erosion since Saturday, continued to be under the threat of strong waves on Wednesday too. The district administration is yet to commence immediate relief works even as Uchchila, Mogaveerapatna, Kaico, Batpady and nearby localities remained under threat.

The India Meteorological Department has warned that there will be heavy to very heavy rainfall or thundershowers across coastal and interior Karnataka for at least the next five days. During the next 24 hours, strong westerly winds with speeds occasionally reaching 45-55 kmph are likely along and off the Karnataka coast, the department said.
