Hawkers in Mangalore protest against ‘big traders’

January 04, 2014 12:10 pm | Updated November 16, 2021 06:06 pm IST - Mangalore:

Hitting back at “big traders” of Central Market for attempting to deprive them of the meagre living they chalk out, several street vendors staged a protest on Friday in front of the market demanding that their trade be legitimised by the civic body. The protest is in response to the threats by the Central Market Merchants Association recently, where, they told reporters that they would forcibly evict “unauthorised” street vendors on Saturday. They had maintained that “mounting loans and high losses” had forced them to take matters into their own hands.

The protesters submitted their memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim.
