Writer-doctor Rathidevi advocates ‘natural delivery'
H.S. Ballal, Pro-Chancellor of Manipal University, said here on Sunday that Caesarean operations could create complications to mothers in the future.
Speaking at function to felicitate R. Rathidevi, a noted gynaecologist, at the Town Hall here, Dr. Ballal said that now most obstetricians and gynaecologists did not wait for natural delivery. They prefer to go in for Caesarean operations because natural delivery was time-consuming. Dr. Ballal released a manuscript of “Natural delivery and caesarean delivery” written by Dr. Rathidevi.
A felicitation committee had organised the function in recognition of Dr. Rathidevi's service to society and healthcare and her contributions to the field of medical writing.
Dr. Ballal said that Dr. Rathidevi preferred to wait for the expectant mother to deliver naturally. “This I know from my professional acquaintance with her for decades,” he said.
Dr. Rathidevi said that her previous seven publications were aimed at serving the interests of common people. “I brought out my books in manuscript only to show that it is possible to bring out a book with a limited budget and made available to more people,” she said.
It was an emotional scene when the quadruplets, Sri Krishna, Sri Vishnu, Sri Devi, and Sri Lakshmi, born to the couple, Biju and Lalitha, felicitated Dr. Rathidevi. The latter only had handled the delivery case of their mother, Lalitha. The organisers distributed copies of her hand written book free of cost among the audience. “Meru”, a commemorative book on the felicitation of Dr. Rathidevi, was also released on the occasion.
District in-charge Minister J Krishna Palemar, who inaugurated the programme, complimented Dr. Rathidevi for her service to society. He also said that he would recommend to the Government to honour her with the Rajyotsava award.
The event was made special with some singers presenting a few poems composed by the doctor.
