The two-decade-old Government Tool Room and Training Centre (GTTC) at Baikampady Industrial Estate will get machines worth around Rs. 2 crore to augment the production to local industries there.

Currently, the centre — which acts as both a training centre and plant for manufacturing tools, dyes and precision components for industries — earns around Rs. 4 lakh monthly as revenue, said officials of the centre.

At a press conference held here on Wednesday, Muthu Kumar, Manager (Training), GTTC, said the department had sent a proposal to the State government for the purchase of co-ordinate measuring machine and CNC wiring machine, both of which would buttress the production of precision parts.

The centre supplies parts to nearly 150 small and medium enterprises in the region and 12 large companies, including Mangalore Refinery and Petroleum Limited (MRPL) and KIOCL. “For the centre, the advantage is that we get revenue to run the day-to-day operations and that our students get experience akin to industrial experience, while, for the industry, they get precision parts by paying only for labour and operation charges,” said Mr. Kumar.

While 12 staff members oversee the manufacturing, the students get to assist the production, he said. Mr. Kumar said the advantages of augmenting the capabilities of the centre are twofold: a higher number of students are trained to meet the demands of a burgeoning tool and precision machining industry; while, production of intricate tools would stop their import.

Free training to SC/ST candidates

For the first time since it was founded here in 1994 (the new building was constructed nearly two years ago), the centre will offer free short-term machine training to Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribe candidates. The centre will take in nearly 40 SC candidates and 30 ST candidates for the six-month CNC course, 10 candidates (five each from SC, ST categories) for both the 12-month tool room machinist course and four-month CAD/CAM course, said Lakshamana Naik S., Principal of the training centre.

Candidates from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kodagu districts can apply for the courses that will end mid-July, he said. For details, contact: 0824-2408003.
