A 10-member group assaulted a 45-year-old newspaper vendor, who also owns a periodical, and ransacked his house in Katipalla near Surathkal on Wednesday.

According to Surathkal police, Abdul Salam was returning to his house on the motorcycle after distributing newspaper copies. Around 4.30 a.m., a group of people were tying bunting near the Muhiyuddin Juma Masjid. A part of the decoration strip was lying on the road and it got stuck with the motorcycle that Mr. Salam was riding.

The police said Mr. Salam asked the group not to keep buntings by the roadside and not cause obstruction to motorists. As Mr. Salam left the place, the agitated group followed him and assaulted Mr. Salam near his house. Mr. Salam has been admitted to a hospital in Surathkal.

Talking to The Hindu from the hospital, Mr. Salam said there was no argument preceding the attack. Mr. Salam said he saw a group of people placing bunting near the masjid when he was driving towards Krishnapura. While retuning, he saw the same group still busy in their work. The strips were strewn around and the twain lying on the road got stuck with his motorcycle.

Hearing the group shout aloud, he stopped and untangled his vehicle.

The ten member group followed him and hit him badly on his head. Mr. Salam said police recorded his statement at the hospital.

Mr. Salam said he was associated with Jamiat Ahle Hadees and was its district secretary.

He believes in Salafi movement and has been writing against some practices of the priestly class. The attack, Mr. Salam suspects, was linked to his religious activities. The police, however, have not registered a case.
