A gram panchayat (GP) secretary committed suicide at Hiliyana village coming under Shankarnarayana police station limits between 3.30 p.m. on October 29 and 12 noon on October 30, allegedly because he felt insulted by a complaint by the GP president.

The police said Sudhakar B. was working as a secretary at Nalkur Gram Panchayat. After receiving a call on his mobile telephone, he left his house at Haikady village at 3.30 p.m. on October 29 and did not return.

When his family members went to Nalkur village on October 30 and enquired about Sudhakar with the Panchayat Development Officer (PDO) Ananthapadmanabha Nayak, he said that Sudhakar had not come to work since October 26.

The family members later found his dead body in a nearby forest. He had consumed pesticide and committed suicide.

In the death note found in his trouser pocket, Sudhakar said he was committing suicide as Nalkur GP president Satish Shetty had complained to the Taluk Panchayat that Sudhakar was consuming alcoholic beverages. Sudhakar felt insulted by this complaint.

Sudhakar’s brother Ganesh B., in a complaint lodged with Shankaranarayana police, said the mental torture by Mr. Shetty and the PDO Mr. Nayak was responsible for Sudhakar’s suicide. The police registered a case.
