Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj has said that Global Positioning Systems had been installed in 164 vehicles transporting sand and the rest of the vehicles will be fitted with the device by the first week of September.

A control room has been set up on the premises of the Department of Mines and Geology and another one at the Police Commissioner's office. Overall control will rest with the Deputy Director of the Mines and Geology Department, Mr. Ponnuraj told The Hindu on Wednesday.

A firm called i-Search - from which the devices have been bought - is installing it in lorries. It will also set up the control room.

The control rooms will be set up at free of cost to the Government. There will be no maintenance costs either, he said.

Mr. Ponnuraj formally inaugurated the installation of the devices on Tuesday. The logo of the Joint Action Committee of sand contractors, sand boat owners, workers and building materials' transporters was also released.

President of the committee Mayur Ullal said that 565 lorry owners had come forward to install the devices. A workshop was held to educate those involved in sand extraction.
