In order to provide better facilities to fishermen, the Department of Port and Fisheries has submitted a proposal for the construction of second phase of the fisheries harbour at Hejmady, about 30 kilometres from Udupi.
There is already an old mini fisheries habour at Hejmady, which was constructed at a cost of Rs. 1.35 crore and inaugurated in 2004. This has a landing quay and an auction yard. But to meet the increasing demands of the fishermen of the area, the State government has asked to develop its second phase. It would provide modern and better facilities to the fishermen.
The second phase works are expected to cost Rs. 122.59 crore.
The Union government would provide 75 per cent of the cost of construction, while the rest would be borne by the State government. “We are awaiting the nod of the Union Government for the proposal,” said T.S. Rathod, Executive Engineer of Department of Ports and Fisheries.
The second phase harbour would come up at the confluence point of Rivers Shambhavi and Pavanje to Arabian Sea at Hejmady. The design of the second phase work had been done by the Central Institute of Coastal Engineering for Fishery (CICEF), Bangalore.
The salient features of the second phase project are construction of breakwaters of 692 metres at the Northern side and 781 metres in the Southern side. It would include a jetty and a landing quay. A boat repair shop, a radio communication tower, a fish merchants dormitory, four fishermen gear sheds to house fishing equipments, two auction halls, two net mending sheds and a fishermen rest room would also be a part of the second phase works.
