July 13, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - MANGALURU:

Police Commissioner S. Chandra Sekhar has invoked the Goonda (The Karnataka Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Bootleggers, Drug-Offenders, Gamblers, Goondas, Immoral Traffic Offenders and Slum-Grabbers) Act against Shailesh Ganiga alias Shailu (24), who is an accused in the attack by Sri Ram Sene members on pub goers in 2009.

Shailesh, who is the 23rd accused in the case, was recently arrested by the Mangaluru North police in connection with a crime.

Following his arrest, Mangaluru North Inspector Shantaram submitted a report about him likely to be involved in activities that would be detrimental to public order in the city.

Based on his report, Mr. Chandra Sekhar invoked the Act against Shailesh.

He has been moved from the Mangaluru prison to the Mysuru Central Prison. Mr. Sekhar said Shailesh was involved in as many as 12 criminal cases reported from different city police stations.

Shailesh becomes the sixth person to be booked under the Goonda Act this year.

As many as nine persons have been booked under this Act by the city police since January 15, 2015.

The order passed by Mr. Sekhar against Ganiga will be reviewed by a committee headed by a High Court Judge.
