District and Sessions Judge Narendrakumar Gunaki said on Sunday that the police personnel should give more priority to prevention of crime. He was speaking after inaugurating the two-day District Police Sports Tournament at Mahatma Gandhi District Stadium, here.

Mr. Gunaki said once people became employed, they generally put an end to all their sports activities. But by holding annual sports tournament, the police department was encouraging its personnel to continue with their passion for sports. This helped bring out talent of the police personnel in sports.

The duties of the police were becoming more complex. In addition to tackling law and order, terrorists and naxalites, the police had to deal with cases relating to Juvenile Justice Act, Domestic Violence Act, and others. On account of the Right to Information Act, the actions of police personnel were now subjected to close scrutiny. Hence, the police personnel had to be physically, mentally and emotionally fit.
