S.A. Prabhakar Sharma, CEO of Zilla Panchayat, on Wednesday urged the presidents of Gram Panchayats to give priority to solving the drinking water problem. He was speaking at a progress review meeting of all Gram Panchayats in Udupi taluk here.

Mr. Sharma said the Gram Panchayats should submit proposals for funds to supply water in their areas. They should not stop supplying water through tankers to water-scarce areas. The Zilla Panchayat would reimburse the money to the Gram Panchayats, he said.

Earlier, the meeting was informed that it was difficult for Karje Gram Panchayat to supply water to water scarce areas through tankers as only Rs. 15,000 had been provided to the Panchayat.

Wrong format

D. Manjunathayya, Executive Officer of Udupi Taluk Panchayat, said four Gram Panchayats, including Karje, had not submitted their proposals in the proper format. They had merely written letters. If the proposal for funds was provided in proper format, money would be released to them, he said.
