March 10, 2013 01:10 pm | Updated 01:10 pm IST - Manipal:

Indira Bairy, director of student affairs, Manipal University, has called upon women to learn self-defence skills and show to the world that they have the strength to combat atrocities and exploitation.

Addressing a gathering after inaugurating the self-defence workshop organised at the Manipal Institute of Communication (MIC) as part of the International Women’s Day celebrations, she said such workshops go a long way in infusing confidence among women and debunk theories which suggested women are weak.

‘Be prepared’

Siddarth Abraham, the kickboxing instructor from Bangalore who conducted the workshop later, underlined the need for women to prepare themselves for different eventualities.

Varadesh Hiregange, MIC director, and M.V. Kamath, honorary director, spoke.
