A 15-year-old girl consumed poison after being sexually assaulted at Lingappayyakadu near Mulki on Friday.
According to the Mulki police, the key accused, Manjunath, is absconding. A woman, who is described as a friend of the accused and in whose house the rape took place, is being questioned.
The incident came to light after the girl consumed medicines meant for killing lice.
She told the doctors and the police that she was lured into a house by Manjunath. Disturbed by the assault she consumed poison, said the police. “She is out of danger,” said a police official.
The girl, from Indi village in Bijapur, studies in class 7 while her parents are daily-wage workers in Bijapur.
Meanwhile, Child Welfare Committee Chairperson Asha Nayak criticised the police for not having intimated the committee. “It was only through television channels that we got to know of this.”
