Geethapriya, Padre to get Sandesha Award

Lyricist Geethapriya, senior journalist Shree Padre, and Kannada writer K.V. Tirumalesh were among nine persons chosen for Sandesha Award for 2012 by Sandesha Foundation for Culture and Education here.

In addition, it has chosen John D'Silva of Karkala for its Sandesha special recognition award. Each of them will be given away Rs. 10,000 in purse, a memento, and a citation, a release said. Mr. D'Silva, a crusader of cooperative banking, is an educationist and social worker.

Mr. Padre of Kasaragod, who is also Executive Editor of Adike Pathrike , a farm monthly published from Puttur, has been chosen for the award in media education category. It said that he played a crucial role in spreading awareness on the dangers of spraying endosulfan and awakening the Kerala government. Maria Jyothi, founder principal of St. Agnes Special School, Mangalore, who has been chosen in education category has helped in establishing special schools in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada. Late Jerome D'Souza of Mangalore has been chosen for the award for his contribution to Konkani music. He composed more than 1,000 songs and brought out 14 music albums and published two anthologies called Amchim Podam (Our Songs).

Indudhara Honnapura of Bangalore, who has been chosen in journalism category, is the editor of Honnapura Samvada monthly. Sandesha Arts Award will go to Peter Lewis of Brahmavar. He has Chitralaya in Brahmavar where he guides budding artists. His art exhibition at Texas in the United States in 1967 brought him international recognition.

Laxman Rao Mohite, popularly called as Geethapriya, is a writer of lyrics, story, and dialogue for cinemas. Catherine Rodrigues of Katpadi has been chosen for the award for Tulu literatureM.M. Madhava Pai of Shimoga has been selected in Konkani literature category.
