A group of six persons abducted and beat up a driver of Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) here on Thursday. The police caught and arrested the group at Manipal.

According to the police, Uday Gowda, the KSRTC driver, had driven a bus from Bangalore to Udupi.

When the bus stopped at the KSRTC Bus Stand here, six persons came looking for Gowda at around 7.10 a.m. Once they found Gowda, they abducted him in a car and beat him. The accused had been identified as Mohammed Riyaz, Syed Abdul Tawab, Mohammed Nauphal, Prakhyat Raj, Abdul Shakir and Mohammed Arfan. The police said Mr. Gowda allegedly misbehaved with Mr. Riyaz’s sister, leading to this attack.

Mr. Gowda is being treated at District Government Hospital. A case had been registered at the Udupi Town Police Station. and investigations were on, the police said.

Yusuf acquitted in two cases

Suspected underworld operative Madoor Yusuf was acquitted in two cases, one of extortion and the other of assaulting a rival, by the Third Judicial Magistrate First Class Court here on November 25. According to his advocate, Imtiaz Bantwal, who received the judgment copy on Thursday, the judge notes that the prosecution had “utterly failed” to prove the charges against Mr. Yusuf after the witnesses turned hostile. In 2003, Mr. Yusuf allegedly assembled a mob and targeted a man. In 2011, he allegedly tried to extort money from a person. With these acquittals, Mr. Yusufstill faces ten cases – three of them of conspiracy to murder – which are in various stages of trial.

Malbari gets bail

The Second Additional District Court has on Thursday granted bail to alleged underworld operative Rashid Malbari in a case relating to illegal possession of arms. However, Mr. Malbari, who has been in jail since his arrest in 2009, may continue in custody as he has other cases pending against him.
