As part of the ongoing pilot project to create awareness on waste segregation at source, over 2,500 houses in Court Ward (comprising Balmatta area) will be given garbage bins freely by the Mangalore City Corporation.

In the first phase it had distributed free garbage bins to over 3,000 houses in another upmarket ward Mannagaudda. The civic body is spending about Rs. 31 lakh for distributing smaller bins to houses and larger ones to apartments in the two wards.

Mangalore City South MLA J. R. Lobo launched the distribution drive in Court ward on Thursday.

MLA J.R. Lobo, who inaugurated the drive in front of a 15-floor apartment complex in Arya Samaj Road, said: “This is for a social cause, and we cannot differentiate between the rich and the poor.

“This is a bait, and this initial investment will hopefully change their habits.”
