Four injured as Cong., BJP supporters clash

Two supporters each from the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party were injured following a clash at Kalinja in Vitla Police station limits on Saturday night.

There was a clash between the two groups in Vijayadka near Bantwal too, according to the police.

The police said the Congress supporters came on a few motorcycles and celebrated in Kalinja following B.S. Yeddyurappa’s resignation as the Chief Minister on Saturday. BJP supporters questioned the celebration when the prohibitory orders under Section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code were in force.

There was a heated exchange of words followed by the members clashing. The police intervened and dispersed the group. Four members were injured in the incident and were admitted to a nearby hospital, the Vitla police said. The news of the assault was spread across social media that led to clash between the Congress and BJP supporters in Vijayadka an hour later, the police said.

Superintendent of Police B.R. Ravikanthe Gowda said the police have registered two cases, each filed by the Congress and BJP supporters.

The police suo motu registered a case against the party workers for alleged violation of prohibitory orders issued under Section 144 of the Cr.P.C. Mr. Gowda said that a case has been registered against four persons for allegedly spreading messages of the clash on WhatsApp groups and creating communal tension.
