Forum to fight atrocities formed in Udupi

June 04, 2013 02:56 pm | Updated 02:56 pm IST - Udupi:

A forum to fight atrocities called ‘Udupi Rises for Justice Against Atrocities’ (URJAA) will come into existence in a fortnight. Addressing presspersons here, Sadhana Kini, coordinator of the forum, said many incidents of atrocities were taking place in Udupi and Manipal. But many people in urban and rural areas were afraid to report such atrocities to the police. Besides, people had little knowledge of laws and Acts and their clauses and sections and their implications.

In times of distress, citizens were incapable of lodging a proper First Information Report (FIR), which often led to the complaint getting diluted.

“Anybody may face distress at any time, but timely assistance and guidance is not available. As a result, citizens felt harassed and demoralized”, she said. Ms. Kini said the proposed forum - URJAA would aim at reducing the grievances of the people. It would help in bridging the gap between citizens and legal issues. The forum would be inaugurated after registering it.

Those interested in becoming a member of the forum or association can do so by emailing to: urjaa.aware@gmail.com urjaa.aware@gmail.com

The forum was not associated with any political party or existing organisation, Ms. Kini said.

Divya Hegde, Ambika G. Nayak, Anitha Nayak, and Revathi Nadiger, members of the coordination committee, were present.
