Inspector General of Police (Western Range) Amrith Paul on Monday asked police officers in Dakshina Kannada and Mangaluru Police Commissionerate to concentrate on detection of cases of theft, robbery and murders for gain during December.
The police have announced December as crime prevention month.
Speaking at the programme to launch crime prevention month, Mr. Paul said detection of such property offences was the only way to bring the murders for gain, theft and robbery cases under control.
“Form special teams and concentrate on finding persons involved in such crimes reported in the last two years,” he said. If you wanted to show the presence of police, these were the offences that should be kept under check, he said.
Home Minister K.J. George in a meeting on November 25 had found a high number of thefts and other property offences in Mangaluru.
He had directed Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) to submit a report in a month as a way forward cracking such cases.
Seeking people’s cooperation, Mr. Paul said they should be cautious too. He said people should keep ornaments in the house. They should be alert and inform police immediately when such incidents take place.
To the police he reminded that crime prevention was not a “one-day exercise”. It had to be a regular affair throughout the year, he said.
Minister in charge of Dakshina Kannada B. Ramanath Rai said politicians like him were cautious and did not associate themselves with people involved in crimes. “This area is very sensitive and police have to work and pressure. And those who work well are recognised,” he said.
