The State government has issued orders banning mechanised fishing activities in the coast for a period of 61 days — June 1 to July 31.

The order was issued to facilitate breeding of aqua fauna as well as the safety of fishermen during the monsoon. During the ban period, no mechanised vessels can venture into the sea to undertake fishing activities.

Similarly, motorised boats fitted with outboard engines beyond 10 hp capacity too cannot be deployed for fishing activities, the order said. The ban however, would not apply to traditional boats and motorised boats fitted with outboard engines less than 10 hp capacity.

Issued under the Karnataka Coastal Fishing (Regulation) Act, 1986, the order said that those violating the ban would be dealt with as per the law. Also, such fishermen would be deprived of diesel subsidy for one year, the order said.
