The sixth Additional District and Sessions Court – one of the four courts set up in the State in January to exclusively try sexual assault cases – has convicted a 32-year-old man for sexually assaulting his 17-year-old relative. This is the first conviction by the court that is now trying as many as 64 cases of rape.

Judge S.H. Pushpanjali Devi found Chandappa alias Babu Nalke guilty of sexually assaulting his distant relative in Belthangady on May 14, 2012. The quantum of punishment will be pronounced on Monday.

According to the chargesheet by Belthangady police, Chandappa called the girl on her mobile phone and asked her to come to Belthangady market promising her a job in a shop.

When she came, Chandrappa took her in an autorickshaw to Malebettu saying that they needed to meet the shop owner. But he took her to an isolated place and sexually assaulted her. Chandrappa was arrested on May 16, 2012.

Prosecutor Shivaprasad Alva examined 13 witnesses including the girl and her mother. The girl’s father turned hostile before the court. The judge convicted Chandappa under Sections 376 (sexual assault), 366 (kidnap) and 506 (threat to life) of Indian Penal Code.

Life imprisonment

The first Additional District and Sessions Judge Uma M.G. on Saturday sentenced to life Chandra alias Chandrashekar (32) finding him guilty of murdering Jaikumar, a civil contractor in Menakaliya near Baikampady.

According to chargesheet by Panambur police, Jaikumar was concerned over his relative Kiran’s wayward attitude resulting from latter’s association with Chandra. Jaikumar had warned Chandra against moving with his relative Kiran and had threatened to file a complaint with the police.

On November 8, 2011, Chandra came to Jaikumar’s house in Menakaliya and reportedly vandalised articles. He then allegedly stabbed Jaikumar that led to his death, the police said.
