August 27, 2010 07:00 pm | Updated 07:00 pm IST - MANGALORE:

The Government has issued the final notification for acquisition of land in 18 more villages for widening stretches between Kundapur and Surathkal and Nanthoor Circle here and Talapady on National Highway 17.

Earlier, the final notification was issued for land acquisition in eight villages.

With this, final notifications have been issued to residents of 26 of the 64 villages where land will be acquired for the project, sources in the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) told The Hindu.

The latest final notification appeared in newspapers on August 16 and the Gazette of India on July 2, sources said.

However, with the exception of Kote, a village in Udupi district, preliminary notices have been served on the other 63 villages.

Meanwhile, the NHAI here has written to the Assistant Commissioner of Mangalore subdivision and the competent authority that it would not be immediately possible to prepare a fresh detailed project report (DPR) for widening the highway.

Earlier, the Assistant Commissioner had requested for a fresh DPR since the State Government wanted the width of the highway to be reduced to 45 m in urban areas.

In its letter to the Assistant Commissioner, the NHAI had said that the DPR had been prepared in accordance with the directions of the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
