A festive atmosphere prevailed in Gulbarga district on Wednesday with Dalits celebrating the 119th birth anniversary of B.R. Ambedkar in large numbers.
Dalitslined up in front of Ambedkar statues across the city and paid floral tributes to the leader.
In Gulbarga city, Dalit youth took out a procession from the City Central Bus-stand to the Ambedkar Statue at Jagat Circle.
Youths from different areas participated in the procession which had tableaux depicting the important phases in the leader's life. All the statues of Ambedkar were given a new look by the administration.
Senior officials of the district administration, such as Regional Commissioner Rajneesh Goel; Inspector-General of Police Gagandeep; Deputy Commissioner R. Vishal; Superintendent of Police B.A. Padmanayan; Additional Superintendent of Police Yellappa; chief executive officer of the zilla panchayat Salma Fahim; Commissioner of the City Corporation Manojkumar Jain; Gulbarga Zilla Panchayat president Shantamma Havaldar and Mayor Sunanda Rajaram were present at the official function at Jagat Circle.
Mr. Goel said the sacrifices made by Ambedkar had helped in undoing the injustice to the oppressed sections.
He said Ambedkar spent all his life fighting injustice and casteism. He was the architect of the Indian Constitution, Mr. Goel said.
Free food and soft drinks were provided to the poor in many areas.
