The Federation of Koraga Development Associations has urged the Chief Officer of Saligrama Town Panchayat to stop the practice of “ajalu”, a social evil, during the annual temple fair at Saligrama in Udupi district.

In a press release issued here on Friday, federation's Kerala-Karnataka unit president Susheela Koraga Nada said the annual temple fair would be held in Saligrama on January 16 and 17. The Saligrama Town Panchayat Chief Officer should take steps to ensure that the governing board of the temple did not exploit the members of the Koraga community by asking them to beat the drums. Members of the Koraga community should not be kept at a distance from other communities. They should not be made to accept the food used in rituals of the temple. They should not be made to accept “cheru”, old clothes, and other such material.

The Town Panchayat Chief Officer said the panchayat had issued notice to all temples in the town not to allow “ajalu”.
