The fans of Reds in the city are planning for the big party. For their team — Liverpool — is very close to ending their 24-year wait for the English Premier League title.
“If Liverpool wins the league, we are partying,” says Nadeem Abdul Khader, a veterinary medicine student.
“We started hoping for a top 4 finish, but now Liverpool has to win,” says Anurag Saukat, a student of arts at St. Aloysius College. Liverpool last won the league in 1990 and “it’s been a long time”, he says. Though Liverpool is yet to lose a game in 2014 and have won 11 games on the trot, its defence still worries Mr. Saukat. “I get very nervous while watching the games,” he says. Liverpool has three more games to play and if it wins all, the Reds will kiss the cup.
The toughest fixture of the three is against its title competitor Chelsea next week which lost its previous match against Sunderland on Saturday, leaving its fans distraught. Mohammed Faheem, a student of St. Aloysius College, who his friends vouch is a big Blue fan, chose to hide the fact when The Hindu spoke to him. “Chelsea? Wts tht (What’s that?),” he replies via Whatsapp when asked about the match.
‘Moyes must go’Manchester United, probably the most popular club, went out of contention a long time ago. A young fan of the club, Danish Ahmed (14), says, “I love Manchester United.” He believes “they will win the league next year”. Many want David Moyes — who replaced Sir Alex Ferguson last summer — sacked after the team’s disappointing show — the latest being 2-0 loss to Everton. Last month, Manchester United lost 3-0 to Liverpool. Fans are not giving up on the team. “We have had our main striker injured for most of the season. We will bounce back next season,” says Mifrah Abubacker.
Arsenal, which seemed destined to be crowned champions, lost its way midway. “We always start well and end up not winning anything,” says Amal Zaheer, a student of St. Agnes. “We should win the F.A. Cup this season at least,” she says.
