Counterfeit currency notes in the denomination of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 were found in the currency chest of Corporation Bank's Bantwal branch.

According to a complaint filed by bank's branch manager T.V. Shenoy on Monday, fake notes were found in the cash chest between May 9, 2011, and December 5, 2011. The bank found nine notes in the denomination of Rs. 500 and three in the denomination of Rs. 1,000 to be fake. Mr. Shenoy said about Rs. 75 lakh would be deposited in the branch every day of which, Rs. 20 lakh would be transacted. Excess cash would be deposited in the currency chest in Mangalore every week. Superintendent of Police Abhishek Goyal said this complaint was among the several registered in the district with regard to fake currency note circulation. It was difficult to find the source as banks had no idea of who had deposited them.
