The former president of the Bantwal Taluk Panchayat Chandrahas Shetty (46), who suffered a bullet injury on Wednesday, continues to battle for his life in a hospital here. The police have taken up a case of attempt to suicide. Mr. Shetty, who has a beedi factory, was found in an unconscious state at his old house near the factory at Bolanturu on Wednesday. His brother Shivaprasad Shetty brought him to the A.J. Hospital and then to the Father Muller Hospital. Mr. Shetty is in the intensive care unit of the hospital.

On Wednesday, Mr. Shetty, who went to his factory in the morning, did not return home for lunch. His wife Ashalatha, who tried to contact him on his cellphone, did not get any response. She asked Mr. Shivaprasad Shetty to visit the factory. At the factory, workers sent Mr. Shivaprasad Shetty to the old house where he found his brother lying unconscious.

The police said Mr. Shetty had an injury in his head which resulted from his 0.32 revolver. Mr. Shetty's relatives told the police that he shot himself as he was suffering from an ailment. The police had recovered the revolver and sent it for forensic examination. “Mr. Shetty has been responding well to the treatment. Doctors have told us that he will recover in the next few days,” his elder brother Nityananda Shetty said.
