Eight fishermen were rescued off the coast near Alive Bagilu (Gurupur River mouth) after their boat capsized there on Monday afternoon. Around 1 p.m., while the deep sea trawler “Nimmi Kalyani” was exiting the Old Port, a wooden plank broke away from the bottom of the boat due to rough seas, said Deputy Director, Department of Fisheries, Sureshkumar Ullal. With the waters too turbulent to tow, the trawler took on water and sank, he said. A nearby vessel – “Sagar Kusum” – rescued the fishermen.

The rescued fisherman are Purusottama (48), Mohan (26), Thimmappa (33), Bhagesh (19), Mohan Shirali (22) – all from Bhatkal in Udupi district – Ramdas (30) from Koppamogeru and Sethu (25) from Tamil Nadu. “The boat was to go for fishing, and had left the port in the morning. Unfortunately, exiting the port is tricky, and the boat could not take the rough waves ,” said Devananda, whose family owns the boat.
