Eight crore saplings will be planted across the State this year: Rai

Minister for Forest, Environment and Ecology B. Ramanath Rai on Friday said that the government was planning to get at least eight crore tree saplings planted across the State in this monsoon.

He was speaking after launching the ‘Koti Vriksha’ campaign of the Mangaluru City Corporation here by planting a tree sapling. Mr. Rai said that the government was concerned about global warming and depleting green cover. Planting of saplings was being undertaken on a war footing and the department would organise programmes across the State for the purpose, he said.

The MCC had identified several stretches of roads in its limits to plant tree saplings during the monsoon.

Mayor Harinath, Deputy Mayor Sumithra Kariya, J.R. Lobo, Mangaluru South MLA, Ganesh Karnik, MLC, were present.Students from neighbouring schools attended the programme and some of them were given the opportunity to plant saplings.
