Economic empowerment essential: Bhandary

March 09, 2013 11:48 am | Updated 11:52 am IST - Udupi:

Congress leader Shyamala Bhandary on Friday called for empowering women – both in social and economic spheres.

Addressing a gathering here to mark International Women’s Day, Ms. Bhandary regretted that despite several attempts, the Women’s Reservation Bill could not be passed in Parliament. She said all political parties lacked the will to get the quota Bill passed.

She said the Bill would pave the way for increased representation of women in the Legislative Assemblies and Parliament. Five persons, including Babu, who is said to be the first person in the most backward Koraga community to do Ph.D., were felicitated on the occasion. The programme was organised by the District Mahila Congress. Office-bearers Sarala Kanchan, Sarasu Bangera, Veronica Carnelio, Lakshmi Bhat, Gopal Poojary, Vasanth Salian, and Pramod Madhwaraj, were present.
