Mangalore City Corporation has proposed to take up 42 underground drainage (UGD) projects by drawing funds from the third stage special grant of Rs. 100 crore from the State government.
The government on March 1, 2014 approved the list of projects to be taken up at an estimated cost of Rs. 15 crore, Commissioner of the corporation Ajith Kumar Hegde S. told The Hindu .
Under KUDCEMPA majority of the projects included extension of sewer network to such areas which have not been covered under KUDCEMP (Karnataka Urban Development and Coastal Environmental Management Project) under which new sewer networks have been laid by availing loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
Some of the wards where sewer network would be extended are Idya East, Idya West, Katipalla North, Hosabettu, Kulashekara church compound areas under Padavu East ward, Suterpete main road and cross roads under Jeppu ward and from Anugraha apartment to Hanuman timbers under Kambla ward.
The UGD network would also be extended in Devinagara, Vaidyanath Nagar under Pachchanady ward, Shirali Lay Out under Marakada ward and Jayanagara in Maroli ward.
According to the Government Order, approving the action plan of 42 projects, some of the old sewer networks in Bunder ward, Kudroli ward, Court ward, Mangaladevi ward, Hoige Bazar ward would be replaced.
The projects would have to be taken up in three financial years from 2014-15, it said.
ProjectsB.T. Kantharaj, Deputy Commissioner (Development) and Superintending Engineer at the corporation said that in the second stage of Rs. 100 crore sanctioned to the civic body, the government has so far released Rs. 40 crore. Of 110 projects listed out to be taken up using the second stage grant, 73 projects have been completed.
Of 255 projects listed out for the first stage Rs. 100 crore grant, 249 projects have been completed.
Three projects were under progress and three projects were pending to be taken up. In that Rs. 92 crore has been spent.
Bus standHe said that the civic body had reserved Rs. 3 crore, as Rs. 1 crore from the first stage grant and the remaining from the second stage grant, for building a bus stand at Pumpwell.
But as no proper policy decision had been taken on building the bus stand there the project has not yet taken off.
