The court of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate on Friday shifted the Manipal gangrape case to the court of the District and Sessions Court for trial.

Bannady Raju Poojary, Senior Assistant Public Prosecutor, told presspersons here all the five accused – Yogesh, Ananda, Hariprasad, Balachandra and Harindra — were produced before the court of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate P.S. Chandrashekhar.

The court also directed the jail authorities to produce the accused before the District and Sessions Court as and when they were asked to. For security reasons Yogesh, Ananda and Hariprasad will continue to be in Shimoga jail. Balachandra and Harindra, who face charges of destroying evidence, will remain in the district sub-jail at Anjar.

A medical student of Manipal University hailing from Kerala was abducted in an autorickshaw and later gang-raped near Manipal on the night of June 20.

The student, who fractured her leg, was discharged on July 4.
