Residents and street vendors on Saturday protested against the delay in completion of work on the market building at Bejai.

“We have been on the street for over four years. The Mangalore City Corporation is yet to complete work on the market,” Mohini, a fish vendor, told The Hindu . She and a few other vendors were asked to vacate the market when work began four years ago. “We have been finding it hard to do business in the absence of a building,” she said.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee secretary Ivan D’Souza, who led the protest, said the city corporation was not bothered about the speedy completion of work on the market building.

He said the delay had led to escalation of construction cost from Rs. 6 crore to Rs. 24 crore.
