CPI(M) condemns caste bias in Krishna Math

‘Math authorities misusing people’s spiritual belief’

The district unit of Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Wednesday condemned the incident of an assistant lecturer of School Allied Health Sciences (SOAHS), Manipal University, being asked to leave the dining hall of Sri Krishna Math/Temple here because she was not a Brahmin.

Vanita N. Shetty, who had gone to have lunch or “prasada” at the dining hall Krishna Math/Temple on April 15, was asked by a meal-server to leave the hall as she was not a Brahmin.

In a press release issued here, K. Shankar, Secretary of CPI(M) District Committee, said the party had held a protest against the “Pankti Bheda” (separate arrangements for Brahmins for lunch in Sri Krishna Math/Temple) in December 2012. But the authorities of Sri Krishna Math/Temple did not solve the problem. Instead, the system of “Pankti Bheda” was continuing in the math/temple. By so doing, the authorities of the math/temple were misusing the spiritual belief of the people, he said.

The CPI(M) also demanded that Vishwesha Tirtha Swamiji of Pejawar Math clarify his reported statement that there should be one God for the Hindu community and the priests should be ready for a spiritual revolution. The seer should answer on what steps he had taken to stop the practice of “pankti bheda” in the temple, the release added.
