Couple to serve life for killing elderly woman

The Fifth Additional District and Sessions Judge, T.J. Shivashankaregowda on Tuesday sentenced Girish Poojary and his wife Parvathi to life on finding them guilty of murdering an 80-year-old relative of a jeweller, in addition to theft of articles from his house in Ramakunja in Puttur in 2007.

Mr. Poojary and his wife, who worked in the farmhouse of jeweller Krishnaraj M.S., stole ornaments worn by Krishnaraj’s wife Vani and her mother-in-law Sunanda. When they were stealing ornaments in the room, Vani’s relative Bharati tried to raise alarm. Mr. Poojary hit her with a heavy stick that led to her death in September 2007. Puttur Rural police arrested the couple and recovered the stolen articles.

The Judge on October 29 had convicted Girish Poojary and Parvathi for offences of murder, robbery, wrongful restraint and wrongful confinement. The Judge also ordered the couple to undergo 10 years of imprisonment for robbery, five years for criminal intimidation, three years for assault and one year imprisonment for wrongful confinement. All the sentences will run concurrently.

Gold seized

The Customs officers on Wednesday arrested Manazir Hassan of Bhatkal for alleged illegal possession of gold worth Rs. 3.84 lakh. The officers caught Hassan, who was found possessing gold tola bar weighing 11.64 grams and a gold sovereign coin weighting 8 grams, after he landed at the Mangalore International Airport from Dubai by an Air India Express flight. The gold bar and the coin were concealed in rubber sandals, Assistant Customs Commissioner Pravin Vinod said.

Feared drowned

A 40-year-old man is feared drowned after he fell off a boat in the North Wharf of Fishing Harbour on Wednesday. The Mangalore North police said Uday Harikanth fell off the boat when he had gone for bath. Fire and Emergency Services Personnel searched the waters but could not find the body. Harikanth’s relative Satish filed a missing complaint, the police said.

Woman dies of burn

A woman whose sari caught fire while cooking gruel at Babuthota in Kodavoor village near Malpe on November 4, died at a hospital in Mangalore on Wednesday.

Lakshmi, who suffered severe burn injuries, was taken to the District Government Hospital in Udupi, which suggested that she be shifted to Kasturba Hospital in Manipal for further treatment. She was later moved to the Wenlock Hospital in Mangalore on November 7.

Suicide

A person committed suicide at Uliyargoli village under Kaup police station limits on Wednesday, as he was suffering from alcoholism and had financial difficulties.

The police said Narayana (45) attempted suicide by hanging himself in his house between 11 a.m. and 11.30 a.m. His family members, who saw him hanging, rushed him to the District Government Hospital in Udupi, where the doctors pronounced him dead. Narayana used to work as a mason.

A case of unnatural death had been registered based on a complaint given Narayana’s wife Sulochana, the police said.
