A couple committed suicide by consuming poison, allegedly due to harassment by a neighbour over a property dispute, in Kabakka town on Saturday. While Hemavati (35) died immediately after consuming poison around 1.15 p.m., her husband, Balasubramanium (48) succumbed to the poison a few hours later in a private hospital in Puttur. In a suicide note left by the couple, they accused their neighbour Jainappa Poojary of harassming them during a recent attempt to sell their property, said the Puttur Town Police. Mr. Poojary was arrested and remanded to 15 days in judicial custody.
Cigarettes seized
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officers on Saturday seized 1,000 cartons of cigarettes that were being smuggled into Mangalore International Airport.
The DRI officers booked eight persons, all from Kasaragod, in connection with the case upon their arrival from Dubai. The cigarettes did not have statutory warnings and was also perceived to be a security threat. Passengers are permitted to bring only two packets of cigarettes.
Molestation custody extended
The District and Sessions Court on Saturday extended until October 19 the judicial custody of the two persons arrested on the charge of molesting a three-year-old girl in Manipal a couple of weeks ago.
Shubha Kumar and Sudhir, who were produced before the court, were sent back to the District Sub Jail at Anjar, about 15 km from Udupi. The pair was arrested by the police near Manipal on September 22, following a complaint given by the girl’s mother a day earlier.
