The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday accused the Congress of downplaying the kidnap and filming sex video of two medical students allegedly by an extortion group recently.
The Congress was hatching a “conspiracy to weaken the case” to “protect the accused” by ensuring that the police did not register a rape case against them, it alleged.
Addressing presspersons here, C. T. Ravi, general secretary of the State unit of the BJP, and former minister in-charge of Dakshina Kannada, said the government led by the Congress should explain why the police had not registered a case under Section 375 of the Indian Penal Code (rape charge) against the accused for forcing the medical students to have sexual intercourse on December 18 at Deralakatte.
The government should also explain why the police did not conduct the medical examination of the victims, he said.
“It shows the dereliction of the duty on the part of police and government,” he alleged.
‘Drug racket’The former minister for higher education said the BJP suspected that drug mafia and a racket of shooting pornographic films was behind the incident. Such mafia, he alleged, was pushing women into sex trade after kidnapping them.
Mr. Ravi said the Congress, which created a stir when a group of students was attacked at a guest house (homestay attack) at Padil on July 28, 2012, was keeping silent over the Deralakatte incident.
“I suspect that the Congress was trying to shield the accused, several of whom have criminal cases registered against them. Why is it protecting criminals and goondas,” he said.
Mr. Ravi said the government should also invoke provisions of Goonda Act against the accused. He said the Chief Minister and Home Minister should intervene in this matter for taking stringent action against the accused.
