Continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CCE) provides lots of opportunity in developing the overall personality of children and making them good citizens, said Kumarswamy H., Lecturer, Government B.Ed College and a coordinator for enforcement of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation system.
“Teachers should not see it as mere filling the details in a given format,” he said. The CCE provided lot of opportunities to turn students into independent learners. It provided the child and the teacher enough opportunities to reflect in the classroom. Reflection involved making learning experiential.
Mr. Kumaraswamy was speaking at a one-day workshop for teachers organised by the All India Ideal Teachers Association’s Dakshina Kannada unit on Saturday. The workshop was held at the Badriya Pre University College in Bunder. The CCE is being implemented in class 8 and 9. It was expected to come into effect for class 10 from the next academic year.
Mr. Kumaraswamy said there was more involvement in mark-oriented evaluation, which did not give scope for overall development of child. “It is our wrong perception that is killing our children.” Teachers should involve students in different activities that help them connect theory with happenings in life. Prompt students to ask questions and develop collaborative learning. “Activities help students in understanding concepts mentioned in the textbook,” he said.
Mr. Kumaraswamy said apart from academic performance, teachers should see the child’s behaviour, his communication skill and varied interest. “You maintain a diary and note down points you notice on a set of children each day. This helps to keep track of development of every student in a big class and reflect the same in the file related to each child.” The CCE helps in being more authentic and provide quality education to students.
He said teachers were reflective performers who help improving child’s personality, develop good behaviour and the attitude towards building a society.
Three teachers were felicitated as model teachers. Five teachers, who retired a few weeks ago, were also felicitated.
