College student run over in Mangalore

Andrea Patrao, who is the daughter of Alwyn Pinto, vice-president of Mangalore Catholic Cooperative Bank, was run over by a concrete mixer vehicle near Urwa Store junction on Wednesday.

According to Mangalore Traffic (West) police, she was riding pillion on a motorcycle with her friend. The two were going from Lady Hill Circle towards Kottara Junction. Near Urwa Store Junction, the concrete mixer vehicle reportedly tried overtaking the motorcycle.

It hit the motorcycle, the two fell on the road, and Andrea reportedly came under the wheels of the concrete mixer vehicle. She died on the way to a private hospital in Kuntikana. The police said Andrea, a resident of Mallikatte, was a first year B.Com student of St. Aloysius College. The police have arrested the driver of the concrete mixer vehicle.

Murder

A 40-year-old labourer reportedly smothered his 35-year-old wife at a house in Panjimogaru in Kavoor police station limits on Wednesday.

According to the police, Fakirayya, a native of Koppal, reportedly had differences with his wife Manjula, whose fidelity he suspected. This had led to the two staying separately for a few weeks. A month ago, Fakirayya brought Manjula back to his rented house in Panjimogaru.

On Wednesday, Manjula’s relative found Fakirayya’s house locked from the outside. When she opened the door, Manjula’s body was found lying on the floor. The police have found a letter purportedly written by Fakirayya where he has admitted to murdering his wif . The police said they are searching for Fakirayya, who was reportedly at large.

The Lokayukta police arrested Ravi Kumar, a labour inspector on the charge of possessing money without proper documents, here on Wednesday.

Mohan Kottari, Lokayukta police inspector, said a team of Lokayukta police made a surprise check at the Labour Department at the district offices complex and arrested Mr. Ravi Kumar .
