MLA Pramod Madhwaraj on Tuesday directed all officials including the Panchayat Development Officers (PDOs) and Village Accountants to give below the poverty line (BPL) ration cards to all eligible beneficiaries in Udupi Assembly Constituency.

He was chairing a meeting of government officials on matters concerning the Udupi Assembly Constituency here.

Mr. Madhwaraj said many poor persons had been wrongly given above the poverty line (APL) ration cards. As a result, these persons could not avail the benefit of government schemes such as subsidised rice. Hence it was incumbent upon officials to identify such persons and provide them with BPL ration cards.

Officials should send him an SMS on how many BPL ration cards had been given by them. He would visit the houses and physically check if the BPL ration cards had been given or not, he said.

Deputy Director of Food and Civil Supplies Arun Kumar Sangavi said that complaints can be given if any person had been wrongly been provided BPL ration card. Prompt action would be taken after proper verification. Some persons with LPG cylinder facilities were still taking subsidised kerosene. The Department would take stern action against such persons.

Mr. Madhwaraj said the officials should also identify eligible beneficiaries who did not have housing sites as it was essential to provide housing to poor people, he said.

Udupi Tahsildar Abhijin said that officials should be cautious while identifying beneficiaries to distribute sites. Three complaints had been lodged with the Lokayukta over provision of 50 “bogus sites”. Application for housing sites should come from the Gram Panchayat and go to the Taluk Panchayat, Zilla Panchayat and then to the Rajiv Gandhi Housing Corporation, he said.
