Classroom in Hejmady Kodi village gutted in fire

A classroom was gutted in an outbreak of fire at the Government High School at Hejmady Kodi village under Padubidri police station limits in the early hours of Friday.

According to Padubidri police, a classroom was destroyed after fire broke out at the school at around 12.45 a.m. The cause of the fire was not currently known and investigations are going on, the police said. Benches, tables and other equipments in the classroom got burnt along with the tiled roof. A fire-tender from the nearby Udupi Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL) at Yellur village and from Udupi city reached the spot and controlled the fire from spreading.

The quantum of loss was yet to be fully estimated. However preliminary estimates put the loss at Rs. 2.5 lakh. A case had been registered on a complaint given by the headmaster of the school Murthy Naik, the police said.

Motorcycle accident

One person was killed and another was injured when a lorry hit a motorcycle at Ashok Nagar near Santhekatte, here on Friday.

According to Udupi Traffic Police, Raja (30), a mason from Kolalgiri, was driving a motorcycle from Malpe to Santhekatte with his friend Shashikanth on pillion, when a lorry in front of the motorcycle took a sudden left turn to give way to another lorry coming from the opposite direction and hit the motorbike.

Both Raja and Shashikanth were thrown out of the motorcycle. While Raja was severely injured, Shashikanth suffered minor injuries. Raja was immediately taken to the Hi-tech Hospital here, where doctors pronounced him brought dead.

Rash and negligent driving by the lorry driver is said to be the cause of the accident.

Bodies found

The bodies of a mother and her seven-year-old son were found in a small pond near their home at Chandalike near Vittal on Friday evening. Around 4 p.m., the bodies of Pushpa (31), a homemaker, and Sharath Kumar were found in a pond in a private plantation around 1km from their house.

The two had been reported missing from their house since Wednesday, and a complaint had been filed in the Vittal Police Station on Thursday. With no marks on their bodies or other suggestions, the Vittal police believe they may have committed suicide. However, the reason for the extreme step is not known.

Pushpa’s husband Janardhana is a truck driver, and the couple had three children – two daughters and a son – said the police.

Acquittal

The fourth Additional District and Sessions Judge B.K. Naik on Friday acquitted Rajesh Poojary (35) of charges of murdering Ravindra Shetty, an assistant in Mangaladevi Yakshagana Mela.

Mr. Poojary, a resident of Kavoor, had been charged of murdering Mr. Shetty in a room of a hotel in K.S. Rao Road on November 2, 2010. In the chargesheet the police had said Mr. Poojary visited Mr. Shetty’s room on the day of the murder and spent some time there. He was accused of strangulating Mr. Shetty and going out of the room with the money Mr. Shetty had kept in his purse. He had been accused under Section 302 (murder) and 392 (robbery) of the IPC.

The Judge acquitted Poojary as there was no evidence to prove the charges. Mr. Poojary, who was working as a cleaner in a bus, is facing trial in another case where he has been charged for murder.

Student kills self

Allegedly miffed at being denied an opportunity to join the National Cadet Corps (NCC), a Pre-University girl hanged herself in her house at the Ceylon Repatriates Colony, Ithur on Friday morning. Kadaba police said, the 17-year-old student of Ramakunje College had an argument with her father – who is a Sri Lankan repatriate working as a rubber tapper – after he dissuaded her from going to an NCC camp.
