A one-year-old child was killed after a bus overturned on National Highway 75 (Bangalore-Mangalore) early on Monday morning. 17 people were injured, police said.

Around 4 a.m., a Sri Durgamba sleeper bus was heading from Bangalore towards Kundapur when it veered off the road and toppled. Manikantan (1), who was being held by his mother Onaja Devadiga, was crushed against the window glass, and was declared dead on reaching the hospital in Mangalore.

Police said rest of the passengers suffered minor injuries and took another bus back to Mangalore.

Manikantan is the only child of Onaja and Nityananda Devadiga, a native of Hemmadi near Kundapura, who operates a small eatery in Bangalore, sources said.
