There is a need for a campaign in the social media against motorcycle rallies which have been causing problems to motorists and pedestrians in the city, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Hanumantharaya here on Monday.
Speaking at a continued medical education (CME) programme on “Road traffic accidents- prevent, prepare, protect” at the A.J. Institute of Medical Sciences, Mr. Hanumantharaya said that holding motorcycle rallies has become a trend for political and other organisations.
“These rallies do not serve any purpose. But they cause a lot of hardship to motorists and pedestrians. It is the common people who suffer a lot,” he said and pointed at the increase in pollution and also the problems to patients because of motorcycle rallies.
“We (police) are struggling to handle such rallies,” he said.
As enlightened citizens, people should carry out a campaign and bring an end to motorcycle rallies. “Somebody has to ring the bell,” he said and asked society to have a serious look at motorcycle rallies that affect a lot of people.
Drunken driving
Mr. Hanumantharaya said that drunken driving, riding two-wheelers without helmets and triple riding continue to be a concern for the city police. “We get frustrated and disgusted looking at such violations, especially during the weekend,” he said and added that it was strange to find such traffic violations in an enlightened society. The police have placed 85 closed circuit cameras in different parts of the city to book cases against traffic violations.
Mr. Hanumantharaya said that social organisations and non-government organisations should hold campaigns, including “Car free day” and “Bicycle ride day”, to ease traffic movement.
The Delhi Government’s experiment with “Odd/Even” vehicle movement could be tried out in Mangaluru.
