Home Minister K.J. George inaugurated the Udupi Traffic Management Centre at the District Police Office here on Tuesday.
Briefing about the Traffic Management Centre, Additional Director-General of Police Alok Mohan said that the centre would monitor 15 Closed Circuit (CC) Pan, Tilt and Zoom (PTZ) television cameras installed at 15 important traffic intersection points in Udupi, Manipal and Malpe. These cameras had been provided with UPS back-up so that they functioned even during power-cuts.
The Traffic Management Centre (TMC) at the Police Control Room can monitor the goings-on at these 15 locations and also zoom in, tilt and pan the area as per requirement.
The TMC also has facility to store video footage of 30 days. Bangalore had been provided with 179 CCTV cameras. 18 district headquarters also had been provided with this facility.
Udupi, including Manipal and Malpe, is the first among the six cities, where CCTV coverage is being expanded in the present phase. The cost of this phase of CCTV coverage in six cities is estimated to cost Rs. 3.67 crore.
This project will not only help in traffic regulation but also in monitoring of events during law and order situations, crime prevention and detection. It will also help in detecting hit-and-run accidents which take place during odd hours.
This system will be integrated with the public-oriented CCTV installations to be set up by public and private enterprises.
Public and private enterprises had been encouraged to install 30 CCTV cameras to cover public roads and intersections.
Five border check-posts in the district had also been provided with round-the-clock CCTV surveillance to prevent and detect inter-district crimes.
