Lakshmivara Tirtha Swami of Shiroor Math has stressed the need to protect and promote Yakshagana.
He was speaking after inaugurating a 10-day Yakshagana training camp here on Sunday. It has been organised by the zilla panchayat, Sarva Shikshana Abhiyan, Yaksha Shikshana Trust and other organisations.
The swami said that people were now realising the importance of Yakshagana. This art form should not be confined to only the coastal districts. It should be performed in other parts of the State so that everyone could appreciate its richness and beauty, he said.
Nearly 400 high school students are participating in the camp.
Raghupati Bhat, MLA, welcomed the gathering.
Deputy Director of Public Instruction B.V. Mahidas, managing trustee of the Sri Janardhan and Mahakali temples N.B. Vijay Ballal and managing trustee of the Anegudde temple Suryanarayana Upadhyaya were present.
